Deepika Padukone – The Queen in Shining Armour Who Fought Depression like a Pro & Emerged Victorious In the End
5 December 2018
Depression is a feeling when one feels empty from inside. When the world is rejoicing, the mind of the depressed is filled with darkness and pain. But unfortunately, the stigma associated with this mental condition has been there for years now.
However, our favourite Bollywood superstar Deepika Padukone, who herself had been a victim of clinical depression, came out in the open and told the world that she had depression when she was in the highpoint of her career.
As the entire country is going gaga over Deepika Padukone and Ranveer Singh’s wedding, proof being the trending hashtag #DeepVeer wedding, here’s the story of the current Queen of Bollywood – Deepika Padukone, who battled depression and emerged an outright winner in the end.
She came, she saw, she conquered! If you think it was as easy as that for Deepika, you’re wrong. Deepika has faced highs and lows in her career and her life has been a roller-coaster ride. Rich and successful, one would wonder her life is perfect. But a few years back, things were not the same.
During the shoot of Happy New Year in 2014, Deepika was detected with major depression, due to which she had to take medication. She used to feel ‘emptiness in her stomach’ and ‘directionless’. While shooting on the sets, she used to go inside her van and cry it out. She said mixing with people made her feel better but only for the time being.
One day, she broke down in front of her mother, Ujjala Padukone, who without wasting time, contacted her psychiatrist friend. In fact, Deepika also took a second opinion as she was initially apprehensive about taking medicines. She underwent counselling, but in the end, medication helped improve her condition. Now, she no longer takes medicines and is much better, though she fears the relapse of depression.
In an interview with NDTV, she admitted that her condition would not have improved if she did not have strong family support –
“First of all, I would not have been able to do it if I didn’t have this support system, if I didn’t have my mom, if I didn’t have my friends, if I didn’t have my father who spoke to me and said it’s OK to go to a doctor, it’s ok to go to a psychologist, it’s ok to go to a psychiatrist and it’s ok to take medication”.
It’s really sad that a celebrity had to open up about depression to a society, which is so insensitive towards mental health problems. We are grateful to Deepika for creating this much-needed awareness.
As told to Hindustan Times –
“I am now working on an initiative to create awareness about anxiety and depression, and help people. My team is working with me to formulate a plan, which will be unveiled soon.”
Deepika has also advised the depressed to share their stories using the hashtag – #NotAshamed.
We are proud of Deepika Padukone and wish her a very happy married life ahead. We love Ranveer Singh as well for choosing a girl who had a past struggle with depression & we’re sure he will always stand by her through thick and thin.
Deepika is a woman of courage because she not only taught us how to fight depression but was also bold enough to open up about her condition. She said it’s normal and nothing to be ashamed of, and both physical fitness and mental health are equally important.
