20 July 2018

Life can surprise us with miracles. Miracles which make us believe in our own strengths and capabilities, miracles that give the sense of pride and wisdom.

In our today’s story, we have Ekta Bhyan, a girl who has made her disability, her pride and achieved success bringing laurels to the Nation by winning the National Para Athletics Championship in club throw and discus throw.

Hailing from Hisar, Haryana, 33-year-old Ekta completed her schooling and then shifted to Delhi for her further studies in the field of medicine. It was during that period in 2003, she met with an accident, wherein she injured her spinal cord and became paralyzed from the shoulder down. The incident took lives of five girls on spot.

Ekta being the survivor fought her battles with calmness and steadiness but since then she became a wheelchair user. The battle was challenging. She underwent treatment with three surgeries done and kept under observation for 9 months in hospital at Delhi.

The real challenge for Ekta started after coming back home from the hospital and accepting the totally changed life, being in a wheelchair. She had to make tough decisions and change her stream from Medical to Arts.

Acceptance came to her gradually from studies and Ekta started to overcome her fears. She went on to complete her Masters in English, then Bachelors of Education and later started working as an Auditor.

Ekta’s father who is a Retired District Horticulture Officer and her mother who has been a housewife always encourage her to not lose hope and continue with the interest in the respective field. The constant support of her parents has made Ekta achieve success in life and be a better human.

Ekta, with her sheer determination, then went on to qualify the most prestigious exam of Haryana- Haryana Civil Services and added feathers to her wings. In 2013, when she qualified for the exam, her interview was published in the newspaper and circulated on social media and WhatsApp.

And somehow it reached to her present coach Mr Amit Saroha, who is an Arjuna-Awardee Paralympian. He then contacted her and asked her if she was willing to take up sports.

With initial struggles, Ekta with hard work and dedication won her first medal at the Para-Athletics National Championship in 2016. She was the only Indian who got qualified for the 2017 IPC Para Athletics World Championships in London.

Initially, Ekta found it challenging to balance between her Civil Services job and practising but she being good at adaptability, prioritized her schedule by focusing on her sports career.

During an exclusive interview with WomenOfCourage, Ekta described her feeling when she won the medal for India.

“The feeling was awesome. I had never imagined I would represent my country at International Stage and holding the tri-colour flag made me fly.”

Sports have played an incredible role in Ekta’s life. Sports made her get an opportunity to represent our Nation internationally. It has been a huge boost to her confidence and obviously, she is more physically fit than before.

And being recognized by the Prime Minister and Chief Minister, it is the recognition for the whole Para-athletics community. People get aware of the fact that something like Para Sports exists. And even disabled people, who think they cannot do anything in life, can get hopes to live life with respect.

Ekta wants to promote education and employment for the disabled. She has been helping people by guiding them and motivating them to achieve success in life through education or sports. She believes, it is the disabled girls and women who need the guidance and encouragement to live life on own terms.

Our courageous woman’s life mantra is:

“Life is not in our hands, but living is. We can make our life beautiful by living it in a better way by accepting the things. Always make best out of the situation you are facing. Nothing can stop you until and unless your own willpower is there.”

We can’t expect life to be easy, battle with the challenges with your hard work and determination and achieve your goal of life, Ekta added.

Being a woman she wants to share a message with our audiences: We are capable of everything. In every field, we are capable of achieving excellence at every level.

And being disabled: Don’t underestimate yourself, don’t lock yourself. Follow your dreams, follow your interests.

Ekta Bhyan is a Woman of Courage because being a disabled person; she never let her disability be a hindrance in achieving her goals. With her sheer dedication and focus, she made our country proud and so made her life worth living.

Loads of best wishes to you Ekta & more power to you!
